Make Your WordPress Site Secure by Limiting its Login Attempts

By Neha Yadav Our Bestseller: WordPress Themes

Hi guys I am gonna discuss a very common issue in this blog regarding WordPress security. No doubt many articles are dedicated for resolving this issue but WordPress users often try to find out something more new and latest to keep their site safe and secure, as security is an important issue to be thought about. However one of my articles covered  10 important tips about how making your WordPress site safe and secure.

Here, I am going to suggest a WordPress plugin to limit your login attempts for your site. This approach is useful when any of the hacker tries to hack or guess your password. By again and again guessing your password lot many times it may be possible that a stage comes where your real password is guessed and then remains nothing to be discussed further now. So to avoid that situation I am here suggesting a way to limit the number of attempts to login into your site.

Limit Login Attemptsis an easy to use plugin that will allow you to lock a user out if they entered the wrong password more than the specified time. You yourself can set that specified time, as by default WordPress allows unlimited attempts to login . Once the hacker reaches that limit by retrying it again and again, it blocks that Internet address from making further attempts.  One more advantage of using this plugin is it will help you to track how many times and by how many people your site is being tried to hack. If you find the same IP address you can Ban it further. You can also get the notification of lockout situation on your email id, So isn’t it easy to make your site secure? Of course yes, all you need to do is install and activate the plugin as shown step by step below in the images -

Step 1: Enter your dashboard and go to the “Plugins” options, click on “Add New” and search for the mentioned plugin.

Step 2:  Then after searching for this plugin install and activate it.

Step 3 : Once you activated your plugin, it will start working on your login page, however if you need you can also customize the settings of your plugin.

Step 4: Now that’s it. You can now check your login page, its now more secure.

So that was all about how to use this plugin and make your site secure, however I would like to again give you some of the tips related to the security of your WordPress site -

1. Never ever keep the default username and password for your site,as it is very easy to be guessed. Whenever you create a new WordPress site you get a default username and password i.e. Username – “admin” and Password – “pass”, avoid to use them once you created a site.

2. Don’t use the common passwords like the name of your site, 123456, abc123 and all childish and easily hacked passwords.

3. Remove error message from the login page, i.e. If the hacker by chance entered a correct username and got an error message to enter correct password for the username, then it encourages to guess the password soon. To remove the error message  open your functions.php file that is  located in your theme folder and then you need to paste  the following code there -

add_filter ( 'login_errors' , create_function ( '$a' , "return null;" ));

Hope these tips were useful to you, your suggestions, queries and comments are most welcome !!!
