Many of you who are WordPress beginner may be confused that what is the basic difference between posts and pages in WordPress when they seems to be similar. By default, WordPress comes with two content types, posts and pages. Several questions arise in mind when should I use post and when pages? How many posts/ pages can be used in WordPress etc. So here in this article I would like to cover up the basic difference between posts and pages of WordPress which will help you to clarify in your mind about both the things.
Let us first discuss about pages,
Pages are made to be static “one-off” type content that is just to display your static content such as your about page, privacy policy, legal disclaimers, etc. The database of WordPress stores the published date of the page, so we can conclude that pages are timeless entities. For example, your about us page never expires. No doubt you can definitely make updates to it, but chances are you will not have about page 2012, about page 2013 etc. Because there are no time and dates that are being tagged with pages, even they are not included in your RSS feeds by default. Pages are even not used to be social in most cases thus they do not have social sharing buttons, or comments.
You don’t want users to comment on your contact page, or your legal disclaimer page. And even you probably don’t want others to tweet your privacy policy page in most cases.
Unlike posts, pages are hierarchical by nature. For example, you can have a sub page within a page. A key example of this in action would be our homepage. You can view other pages through the way of home page. This feature allows you to organize your pages together, assign a custom template to them.
WordPress by default comes with this feature that allows developers to customize the look of each page when necessary. In most themes, post and pages look the same. But when you are using your page to create a landing page, or a gallery page, then this custom page templates feature comes in very handy.
So in a glance view you can conclude that
Pages are timeless. Pages are not included in RSS feed. Pages are NOT social. Pages are hierarchical. Pages have custom template feature. Now let us move on to discussion about posts, but before discussing about it I must clarify you that you can use as many posts or pages in your site according to your requirement but they must be organised in a proper way.
Posts are content entries listed in reverse chronological order on your the home page of blog.If you are using WordPress as a blog, then you will end up using posts for majority of your site’s content. Due to this order, your posts are meant to be timely. Older posts are archived based on month and year. As the post gets older, the user has to put a lot of effort to find it. You have the option to organize your posts based on categories and tags.
Because WordPress posts are published with time and date in mind, they are included through the RSS feeds. This allows your readers to be notified of the most recent post update via RSS feeds. Bloggers can use the RSS feeds to deliver email broadcasts through services like Aweber or MailChimp. The timely nature of posts makes it social. You can use one of the many social sharing plugins to allow your users to share your posts in social media networks like Twitter,Facebook, LinkedIn etc.You can even create a daily and weekly newsletter for your readers to subscribe to.
Posts encourage conversation actually. They have a built-in commenting feature that allows users to comment on a particular topic. That discussion leads to a very deep knowledge regarding that topic in the mind of both the parties that is blogger and reader. Also with the help of this feedback blogger can prepare himself/herself for the next topic to be covered up.
Again in a glance view you can conclude about posts that
Posts are timely. Posts are social . Posts are included in an RSS feed. Posts can be categorized. Posts do not have custom template feature. This was all about the basic difference between the two, however your comments, suggestions and queries are always welcome!!!
