End Up Your Confusion Here About Categories Vs Tags in WordPress?

By Neha Yadav Our Bestseller: WordPress Themes

Many of the WordPress users are still confused about categories and tags, which is better, which will help the most to drive better traffic on the site etc, Yes no doubt many other these types of questions may arise in your mind? Not to worry now, reading ahead will help you to end up your confusions and doubts. This article will make a clear picture in your mind about what to do with your post ?

In the WordPress terminology both i.e. Category and tags are named as taxonomies. They improve the importance and usability of your site, also it makes the content of your site systematic. If your posts are being properly categorized and tagged then your visitors will find it easy to search the content of their requirement, instead to read the content of your site in a sequential way, which is sometimes time consuming and irritating.

Difference between Categories and Tags :

Categories -

They are used to group your posts, they actually are self explanatory to describe what your post is really about. In other words they are the topics which help your visitors to identify your post, whether it is the post they are looking for? They are hierarchical and you can also make subcategories to make your posts more systematic as shown in the image below. You should always categorize your post otherwise your post by default is shown under “Uncategorized” category, which cannot assist the visitors to exactly know about the kind of content. You are free to make any numbers of categories and sub categories on your site, it will help you to arrange the data on your site, and thus makes your site clean and well arranged. However it is not at all compulsory to make sub categories, it is totally optional. It is sometimes assumed that adding a single post to multiple categories will make your post more SEO Friendly, yes of course it may sometimes be successful, but here again the point to be remembered is your multiple categories must also be co-related to each other. For example your multiple categories for your single post is suppose Interviews, fashion and recipes then in such a case all the categories are mismatched with each other and your content becomes totally confucious, on the other hand if the categories are travel, tourism etc then at a first view itself one can recognize that the article is somehow related to journey, travelling, tourism etc.

So this was all about categories now moving to the other section that is tags.

Tags -

Tags are micro data that are used to specifically describes your content. They are not hierarchical, tags are those keywords that are self descriptive to explain your content. For example if your post is been categorized into “Automobiles” category then your tags can be car, bike etc. Tags are optional, as compare to categories. As once your content is properly categorized then you don’t require to make tags for it further. You can assign multiple tags for a single post, it will help you to improve the usability of your site, but remember to only use those tags which can be justified with your post. In very short I must say tags come in where your categories are out enough to describe the type of content in an explanatory way.

So now that was all about tags, hope this article made a clear picture about categories vs. tags in your mind.

At the conclusion point of this article, I want to clarify two points in your mind -

Never ever try to write your content according to SEO or something, instead focus that you have to write the content that is useful, helpful, self explanatory and descriptive to your readers. Believe me its your work that speaks, once your readers are satisfied with your content, it will automatically be popularized and drive traffic to your site.  The point to remember is, google always ranks those contents at the top which are liked and visited by most of the people . Otherwise once you can make your site at the top by SEO tricks, but you cannot maintain that position until the content of your site is up to the mark. My first point does not imply that SEO tricks and other tools are useless, no doubt they are also important and plays a vital role in the traffic of your site. So categories and tags are additional values of your post. Categories are the “buckets” for your content, where as tags are fine tunings to your categories. Categories and tags should be always different and if possible must be unique.

At a glance I must say that it’s your content and its additional tools like categories and tags etc that makes your site get more and more traffic on it and assist your users to easily browse and understand your site efficiently. A very useful post with no SEO is of no use and vice versa i.e an organized and well SEO practised content with no useful information is also of no use. So make your content extremely excellent, let that post fall in a particular category and use tags in it so as to make it search engine friendly.
