When your blog is going under huge functionality change such as design change, integrating new modules etc then you should put your website into maintenance mode.
Why is it important to put your blog in maintenance mode:
Your visitors will know that you are under maintenance. On maintenance page you can specify the reason to go into maintenance mode. You can stop visitors to browse your website when it’s under some functional changes otherwise things may go horribly wrong.Apart from this it’s your blog reputation, if your visitors visit your blog/website and found some errors or missing functionality then this reflects in your blog’s reputation. So it’s always better to notify them about the internal process going on by putting your blog under maintenance mode with proper message. Don’t worry you do not need any technical expertise to do this. All you need is installing a small and cool plugin named
‘WP-maintenance mode ’.
To download this plugin Click Here. Install this plugin in your WordPress website and simply activate it. Now go to your plugins page and look for ‘WP-maintenance mode’ plugin, there you will see ‘settings’ option. It will look like this:
Click on settings and you will be shown a lot of options to be set. First option is to activate this plugin by setting its attribute to “TRUE”.
You can use this plugin the way you want. It offers you attractive pages with your custom message for website visitors. The other settings options let you do this by uploading your own CSS file and choose your own theme.
Scroll down the settings page and you will options to set message and title for your visitors. Here I personally suggest you to write something appealing. Your visitors should understand the reasons clearly that why your website is not available at the moment.
This wonderful plugin has one good thing that it allows you to simply put a “Admin login link” on the front page. Admin can login to the site using the same link and deactivate the plugin once your site is ready to launch again.
Note:
Deactivate and delete the plugin once your site is ready.
Use this plugin as it becomes necessary for you to offer good service to your users. So if your site is under some change, put your site in maintenance mode. Even for a new website, if its not fully developed pre-launch message is a good choice.
